♥ About HandiCraftKate ♥
Welcome!
HandiCraftKate is a collection of handmade and Eco-friendly nuno felted scarves, wet felted bags, and other wonderful felted creations made by an indie fiber artist. For me “handmade” means craftsmanship, uniqueness, and personality. Handmade items are special items. Most of all, handmade means sharing. The sharing of joy and creativity.

A Fiber Fairytale
And it began with a hiccup. I started my etsy shop intending to sell paper craft goods, but it ended up being a shop devoted to hair accessories made out of eco-friendly wool felt. Eventually I branched out to using upcycled leather, silk, and wool fabrics too. So after spending a small fortune collecting leather skirts, silk boluses, and wool blazers from GoodWills all across Kentucky it occurred to me that I really didn’t enjoy making fabric flower headbands anymore. I needed something more challenging. But what?
Felt was at the core of most of my flower designs and it just seemed that hand making my own felt would be better. So I innocently wandered into the world of wet felting. Little did I know how addictive the meduim could be. At first I tried to make flowers and didn’t have much success, almost giving up I then decided to try making hats and that is when everything started to click for me in a life changing sort of way. Felt bags and necklaces followed and eventually I got up the nerve to try nuno felting. Nuno opened up the world of scarves and soon I was using silk hankies and wool neps to add texture to my work. My scarves, bags, and hats evolved and become more and more complicated and intricate. The more techniques I learned the more in love I fell.
Today I am still what I call a Journeyman felter, not a novice anymore, but not a master yet either. I love my craft and as long as there is more to learn and new things to make I will be felting.
